Achievement of Panimalar Engineering College Students

Thiruvallur, Mar 11: In a competition held jointly by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development and AICTE, students won the first prize of Rs. 1 lakh by creating transport management software during the Smart India Hackathon 2019, a 36-hour non-stop software development competition.

This competition was conducted across India in 48 centers with 1,348 teams participating. Final-year CSE students from Panimalar Engineering College in Poonamallee—Nithesh, Rahul, Raj Prabhakar, Sandeep, Praveen, and Swetha—participated in the center at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.

Furthermore, final-year IT students Avinash, Sanjayraj, Someswar, Arunachalam, Vidhya, and Nishanthini, along with Associate Professor Sridhar, participated in the competition held at Lovely Professional University in Punjab. They won the first prize of Rs. 75,000 for creating software for an email and short messaging web portal.

This competition was inaugurated by the Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar. On the final day of the competition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed and congratulated the students via video conferencing.

Hackathon: Budding scientists display software solutions

VARANASI: Budding scientists from various states came up with their innovative ideas and software applications to solve our various problems during the 36-hour Smart India Hackathon-2019 which ended at BHU on Sunday night.

A team from Panimalar Engineering College, Chennai, worked on developing a software on traffic management using line detection and prioritised queuing system. With the help of the software, potholes and traffic signals could also be identified.

"The solution is to provide a complete traffic congestion resolving and monitoring system achieved by identifying patterns on roads through CCTV cameras and allowing signals to clear density of vehicles," said Nithesh KG, a team member.

Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar addressed the participants through videoconferencing and motivated them to come out with innovative solutions.

Prof Kavita Shah, a coordinator of the event, said some ideas on which the software building was done were getting real time accident information, disaster management assess impact on environment among others.

A mobile app named 'Secupia' was developed by a team from BITS, Pilani, Rajasthan. Aryan Mehra, a team member said, "Our system logs all the vehicles entering/exiting the society makes guest visits seamless and tracks domestic staff in the society. Our system analyses all the data and makes smart recommendations not only to residents but also the guards he added."

After the formal inauguration of the 36-hour continuous Smart India Hackathon-2019 competition on Saturday morning in the auditorium of the Central Discovery Center located at BHU, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, Co-chairman of the Smart India Hackathon organizing committee Dr. Anand Deshpande, and AICTE Chairman Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe encouraged the participants via video conferencing. Meanwhile, AICTE committee member Prof. Rajiv Kumar stated that around 37,000 teams comprising more than two lakh students had applied for the competition.

Out of these, only 1,400 teams were selected for the competition organized across 48 centers in the country. AICTE's BHU coordinator Dr. Nitin Bhide said that the responsibility of solving about 500 digital problems posed by the government, institutions, and private companies rests on the shoulders of young scientists. Because of them, the country will move towards a major transformation. Meanwhile, SIH-2019 BHU Convener Prof. Kavita Shah mentioned that the government, institutions, and private companies had presented their problem statements.

Apps being developed for these problems: Participating teams at the Central Discovery Center are working on six problem statements. These include traffic management, capturing road accidents on camera, providing accurate information about accidents, informing relevant individuals in case of an emergency, and environmental protection. The participating teams must find digital solutions to these within just 36 hours. Late at night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also interacted with the participants via video conferencing. Following this, a Zumba dance session infused fresh enthusiasm among the participants.
